LNER's team of machine learning specialists has created a technology designed to forecast train delays.

This technology driven system has successfully undergone trials at Peterborough and Newark Northgate stations, resulting in improved dwell times for LNER trains at these locations. Data gathered during the trial indicated that more than 450 potential delays were averted. As a result, LNER is now rolling out this technology across its entire station network, with the expectation that it will aid in maintaining timely train operations. The system analyzes historical train performance data and incorporates variables such as passenger numbers and weather conditions. It utilizes this information to identify services at LNER stations that may experience delays.

All LNER personnel can access this tool through their work mobile devices. They will utilize it to pinpoint services at risk of delay and to understand the anticipated reasons for these delays. This capability allows station staff to plan effectively and tailor their support to better address passenger needs. After facing significant service disruptions in the past two months, the operator is optimistic that this initiative will enhance the smoothness of train services by embracing technology , business operations and improve passenger journeys.
